Ce genre regroupe 130 espèces environ, originaires d' Asie, Chine et Japon plus particulièrement. Les fougères de ce groupe sont à feuilles généralement persistantes, forment des touffes étroites ou traçantes. Les Arachniodes préfèrent l'ombre partielle et les sols humides, riches et bien drainés.
