Polystichum

 The genus Polystichum belongs to the Dryopteridaceae family and inludes about 480 species (source gbif.org) of subcosmopolitan distribution. Four species are present in European flora. This genus is characterized by its evergreen and often glossy fronds, once-pinnate or bipinnate, its auriculate pinnae or pinnules, its rounded sori protected by peltate indusia, its growth in clumps.


  • Polystichum setiferum 'Herrenhausen'

    Family : Dryopteridaceae.

    Dramatic fern of about 1m wide. The fronds are tripinnate, bulbiferous, lacy, erect when they are young, and then spreading. It is suitable for acidic to very chalky soils, even dry, in shade or medium shade. Evergreen. Height of the fronds in spring : 80cm. Width : 1m. Hardiness : -25°C.

    The fronds are narrow, bright green, often bifid. The rachis is thick and covered with golden scales and numerous bulbils. The pinnules are little and round. It is suitable for chalky or acidic cool soils in shade or medium shade. Evergreen. Height : 50cm. Hardiness : -25°C.

    Family : Dryopteridaceae.

    An attractive cultivar. Pinnules divided in segments, light green, very fine, dense and overlapping like tiles ; it forms wide mossy cushions and produce numerous bulbils on the rachis. It likes chalky or acidic, well-drained soils, even dry in medium shade. Evergreen. Height : 50cm. Hardiness : -25°C.

    Family : Dryopteridaceae.

    This cultivar differs from the species by its tripinnate fronds.The enlarged pinnules are divided in pinnulets. The evergreen fronds are broad, with a dense and abundant appearance. This Polystichum appreciates alkaline or acidic soils, cool and humusy, in the shade. Grown from bulbils. Height and width:80cm. Hardiness :-25°C.

    Family : Dryopteridaceae.

    Small development species forming  a dense and symmetrical crown, neat, fine, dark green, long-lived, weatherproof. The young croziers and the stipes are covered with black scales.     Hybrid between P. proliferum and P. braunii. Sturdy fern which forms an impressive crown on a scaly rhizome. The fronds are lanceolate, bipinnate, medium green, glossy. This hybrid can be propagated from the bulbils at the apex of its fronds. It is one of the largest Polystichum. It likes cool and drained soils, acidic or slightly alkaline, in medium shade.
