Adiantum

In the genus Adiantum, there are about 200 species of graceful and light ferns, most of them are tropical. Sori are protected under the inrolled margin of the pinnules. Most of the Maidenhair ferns enjoy any soil type, many prefer lime.


  • Adiantum aleuticum var. subpumilum

    Family: Pteridaceae.

    Dwarf maidenhair.

    Very dwarf variety, fan like fronds, pinnules overlapping. Slow and difficult to establish, it enjoys alkaline or acidic soil, humusy, cool, drained, in light shade. Height : 10cm. Hardiness : -20°C.

  • Adiantum capillus-veneris

    Family : Pteridaceae.

    True maidenhair. Venus-hair fern

    The rhizome is short-creeping. The stipes are black, shiny and thin. The lamina is bipinnate, each pinnule is rounded with a crenate margin. The elongated sori are covered with a false indusia, the reflexed edge of pinnules. This delicate fern will do well in cool, wet, chalky soils, rockeries,  living walls, in shade. Be careful with slugs. Evergreen. Height : 20/30cm. Hardiness : -15°C.

  • Adiantum pedatum

    Family : Pteridaceae.

    The rhizome is short-creeping. The lamina is arranged in a horizontal fan, , on an upright stipe. Very sophisticated and elegant, it forms bright green clumps. The young fronds are green. It enjoys acidic or chalky soils, woodland compost, regular water, good drainage and shade or light shade. Be careful with slugs and snails on the young fronds. Semi-evergreen. Height : 30/50cm. Width : 50cm. Hardiness : -30°C.

  • Adiantum venustum

    Family : Pteridaceae.

     Himalayan maidenhair.

    The branching rhizome is creeping, bearing a colony of elegant evergreen fronds. In spring, the young fronds are pink-coloured. Although slow to establish, once it has, it will grow to form large clumps. It is a beautiful and easy ground-cover. Give it humus in a moist acidic or alkaline soil in light shade. The mature fronds can be used as cut foliage in flowers arrangements. Evergreen. Height : 25cm. Hardiness : -25°C.
