Woodwardia

 The genus Woodwardia belongs to the Blechnaceae family and includes 24 species, distributed in Asia, in North America until Costa Rica, one species in mediterranean area. This genus is characterized by bipinnate or bipinnatifid fronds, anastomosing veins, and sori in discontinuous lines.

    Family : Blechnaceae.

    Cover ground fern for wet areas. It forms spreading colonies with its creeping rhizome. The deciduous fronds are dimorphic. Sterile fronds are pennatipartite or pennate, broad, waxy ; they appear in spring, bronze colored. Fertile fronds appear in summer, upright with narrower pinnae. Easy to grow in a wet soil, acidic, rich, in deep or light shade. Height or width : 50cm. Hardiness : -30°C.

  • Woodwardia fimbriata

    Family : Blechnaceae.

    Giant chain fern.

    This stately fern forms an upright to flared crown. The fronds are lanceolate, light green, and leathery. It enjoys rich and humusy soils, acidic or neutral, always moist, along a stream, a pond, in medium shade. Evergreen in a mild climate. Height : 60/150cm. Hardiness : -10°C.

    Family : Blechnaceae.

     A spreading crown that can reach 1,5m wide. The young fronds are green. The mature fronds are bipinnate, thick, broad, medium green. During summer, the fronds are partially covered with green plantlets that can be propagated. It grows in acidic or chalky soils, in light shade Evergreen in a mild climate. Width : 1,5m. Hardiness : -12°C.

    Synonym : Woodwardia orientalis var. formosana.

    A spreading crown that can reach 3 meters wide. The young fronds are rose-coloured. The mature fronds are bipinnate, broad, glossy, medium green. During summer, the fronds are covered with orange-pink plantlets that can be propagated. It grows in acidic or chalky soils, in light shade  Evergreen in a mild climate.  Width : 3m.
